Meals and Food

Food is an integral part of patient recovery and we are committed to meet diverse individual dietary needs.

During the hospital stay, you will be served three meals (breakfast, lunch & dinner) and an afternoon snack each day. It is advisable to consume the meals immediately upon serving or within four hours from the time it is served to avoid the risk of food poisoning.

  1. Any meal order made within meal serving window time, meal will be served but selection is limited to menu availability.

  1. Any meal order made after 2nd cut-off time will be served either of the following options; light snack set (savoury porridge or sandwich with a hot drink and cut fruit) or early meal (within 1 hour before next upcoming meal time) will be served.
  2. Any admission after 7 pm will be considered as late admission. Nursing personnel to serve pre-booked late admission meal or snacks.
  3. Cut-off time for meal cancellation/ meal changes:

Note:
Meal changes is allowed regardless of cut-off time if:

a) Patient has food intolerance or altered appetite
b) Doctor / Dietitian makes the changes.

  1. Reminder
  • Any admission after 7.30pm shall not be served with any meals. Meals shall be served beginning with breakfast the next day. Patients may request light refreshment from the Nursing staff if necessary.
  • All meals are planned to meet your nutritional and dietary needs, with consideration of your cultural and religious perspectives. Based on your medical condition and age group, you may be categorized under normal. Therapeutic , Maternity, or Children’s menu whereby each menu is provided with a variety of meals in our Vegetarian Menu. Our Food Service dietitians will design meals for patients with special dietary needs based on their specific diagnosis and recovery plans.
  • Meals are complimentary for patients only. Extra meal for caretakers are available but will be charged accordingly.
  • Meals can be reheated by calling the nurse to assist as long as the meal is consumed within the 4 hours it was first served. Only meals provided by the hospital can be reheated.
  • Patient’s meal will be served in accordance to Doctor’s diet prescription based on your condition.
  • Food service staff will be collecting the soiled trays an hour after serving . If patient have yet to finish their meals within the hour, Food Service staff will collect during the next meal.
  • Food will not be served for patients on enteral (tube) feeding.
  • Additional requests of food items that are not included in the meal shall not be encouraged or allowed to prevent any interference with the patient’s recovery plan.

 

  1. Bringing in food for patients
  • Bringing food for the patients is not encouraged. Some patients may be prescribed on a special diet or may need to fast due to their medical condition.
  • Food poisoning may occur if unsafe food is consumed. Common cases of food poisoning typically include at least one or more of the following symptoms: nausea, stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever and headaches. Food poisoning can be very serious for patients recovering from illness or an operation. It is important that the food brought in are prepared, transported, stored and reheated properly to prevent food poisoning. There are food safety standards to comply at DSH2. Therefore, the hospital cannot be held responsible for storing, heating or serving any food prepared externally that is not within the hospital premises as it may not meet the required food safety standards.
  • If you, your visitor or caretaker choose to bring food from home, remember to :
    • Talk to our Dietitian or Nursing Staff about the food you can consume while admitted.
    • Use insulated food containers to sustain the temperature when transporting the food to the hospital.
    • Bring only enough food that can be consumed at one time.
